Dream Wedding
In my dream I was at a wedding.
There were people I knew there,
and also strangers. The way it is
in dreams.
In my dream I was dressed like a man
in a brown tweed suit.
I think it was a three-piece.
I don’t remember who asked me to wear it,
but I was happy to oblige.
In my dream my hair was longer than it is
when I’m awake.
I was being particular as I looked
in the mirror to brush it to the side.
It was damp, and I smoothed it out of my face
and tucked it behind my ear.
In my dream I was walking against a
crush of people —
were they going to the wedding?
Why was I walking away?
Where was I going in my three-piece suit
with my hair tucked behind my ear?
In my dream, in the blur of faces, you were there.
You nodded and smiled,
and I awoke.
